The need for cybersecurity professionals is growing for a multitude of reasons. One of them is the rise in digital usage. It’s simple, the more people online, the more likely a cyber-attack will occur. Unfortunately, this is our reality, but luckily, cybersecurity professionals exist to make our digital worlds safer. Cyber threats affect everybody, and many organizations are taking cybersecurity more seriously. As a leader in technology placement, our team at Raso Solutions helps our clients find cybersecurity specialists that aid in preventing cyber attacks. Read about three cyberattacks that happened in 2021 and the destruction that ensued.

LinkedIn

In April 2021, over 500 million LinkedIn contacts were leaked. The hack included full names, email addresses, phone numbers, genders, and more. In LinkedIn’s official statement, the platform made it clear that the leaked information was not from a data breach but profile scraping. Since then, LinkedIn has tightened the reigns on what user information can be seen and how connections can interact. Although this specific hack did not stem from a backend attack, it showed how easy it was for phishing to occur on any user profile information, making you think twice about what you decide to share publicly on the web.

Twitch

In October 2021, Twitch announced 125 gigs of data were posted online. The hacker gained access to Twitch servers due to an incorrect configuration and released creator payout reports dating to 2019. The Twitch team confirmed that the hack was real, and the information shared by the hacker was, in fact, actual internal documents. The database leak could have been prevented had Twitch implemented the correct security mechanisms.

Colonial Pipeline

In May 2021, Colonial Pipeline, one of the largest oil pipelines in the United States, was forced to shut down due to a ransomware attack that left their customers in the southeast without fuel. The hack led to panic buying of gas in certain parts of the country and increased gas prices. It was reported that Colonial Pipeline paid nearly 5 million dollars to the hackers within several hours of the attack. In the end, the cyberattack not only damaged the reputation of the organization but it revealed how vulnerable the U.S. energy infrastructure is. Experts say a more prolonged fuel shortage could have disrupted mass transit systems.

At Raso Solutions, we predict that these cyber threats will increase in 2022, so hiring the best cybersecurity professionals is crucial right now. To learn how we can help kickstart the search for your next cybersecurity rockstar, book a free consultation!
