In May 2021, the “Great Resignation” was coined by Texas A&M’s very own Anthony Klotz. The term is used to describe the high volume of people quitting their jobs in North America. In recent times, the Labor Department reported a record number of 4.4 million Americans saying “I quit” this past September. As time goes on, the numbers are increasing, and many wonder when we will see a change. The even bigger question is, what does the Great Resignation mean for you as a tech job candidate?

Inc.com asked individuals who left their jobs what their reasoning was, and the top two answers were burnout and flexibility. In 2020 many of us switched to working from home, and the 9 to 5 schedule started looking like 9 to 9. Essentially, work-life balance was blurred, and people’s office became their home, and their home became their office. Job changers seeking a more flexible schedule are looking to achieve a better work-life balance. Working in an office with others can boost collaboration and camaraderie but making it a requirement for them to come into the office five days a week won’t help companies recruit top tech talent. Research shows that resignation rates were highest among mid-career employees in their late 30s and early 40s, making sense for individuals with families to want to find a career that allows them to be around their families.
